General information about Davos

Davos is not only the largest mountain sports resort and conference centre in the Alps, but also the highest town in Europe (1560 - 2844 m above sea level, 5100 - 9300 feet). Davos is located in the south-eastern part of Switzerland, in Canton Grisons. Although the official language is German, Davos is very multi-cultural - most people can also get by in one or more of English, French and Italian.

Davos can be easily reached by car or rail. The nearest airport is Zurich, 2 1/2 hours away by car, or half an hour longer by train.

Summer Paradise

The meadows, forests and mountains around Davos are criss-crossed by a well-marked and maintained network of footpaths. All in all there are 450 km of branching footpaths - from easy walks to narrow mountain tracks through steep terrain above the tree line, alongside mountain streams, over Alpine meadows, and through remote hamlets in beautiful side valleys. The Davos mountain railways and cable cars, which connect five different extensive walking areas, will take you to the most beautiful viewpoints of the Davos region.

Davos is the Alpine metropolis of diversity - with first-class fitness, recreation and sports facilities. Everyone to his own - live and let live. Splash in a garden pool, or figure-eight on the public ice-rink, knock around on a tennis court or wind-surf. Why not go jogging, or ride on a horse and carriage in the nearby Sertig Valley? A paradise for hang-gliders and paragliders, mountain climbers and bikers, and even for inline-skating trendies.



Winter Paradise

Davos is an El Dorado for winter sport, attracting snowboard and skiing fans from all over the world. Umtra-modern transport systems connect five extensive and yet diverse skiing areas. Cross-country skiers find their challenge on 75 km of prepared tracks. Warm up by ice-skating or curling on two artificial ice-rinks, or Europe's largest natural ice-rink.

There is fun to be had on the numerous toboggan and sledding runs, while dare-devilers can hang-glide or paraglide in front of a majestic backdrop. Davos has something for everyone. Those who want to get away from the excitement of the pulsing centre, will find their peace and quiet in the expanse of nature around Davos.

Davos makes the perfect centre for day trips in the canton of Grisons, or the ideal starting point for further afield:

Heidi - Bernina Express

The Heidi - Bernina Express connects "Heidiland", and the Davos holiday region, with the glaciers of the Bernina Massif, and Tirano in Italy. During the summer months, and weekends in winter, the Bernina Express Bus takes visitors even as far as the palm trees of Lugano.

Glacier Express

Travel by the Glacier Express from Davos to Zermatt at the foot of the world-famous Matterhorn, in amongst the Valais four-thousanders! The Glacier Express offers an interesting cross-section through the variation of Switzerland. An unforgettable experience with a 360° view from the Panorama Wagon. The journey to Zermatt takes 8 hours.

Lucerne and Titlis

Enjoy a romantic trip through the "Heidiland" around Bad Ragaz, to Lucerne, with its world-famous Kappelbrücke wooden bridge, and then on to Engelberg and "Mt. Titlis".

National Park of Switzerland

A journey over the Flüela Pass by postbus into the Engadine Valley to Zernez to see the National Park of Switzerland is worthwhile at any time. Just as enjoyable is the return journey via St. Moritz and the Albula Pass.
