Theme 15:

Applied Mineralogy and Archeometry

Coordinators: Hans-Joachim Kleebe (kleebe@geo.tu-darmstadt.de)
  Tom Sharp (tom.sharp@asu.edu)

Symposia:

S97 Aspects of Modern Ceramics
S98 Aspects of Melts and Glasses
S99 Archeometry

S97: Aspects of Modern Ceramics
Conveners: Wolfgang Braue(Wolfgang.Braue@dlr.de)
 Hans-Joachim Kleebe(kleebe@geo.tu-darmstadt.de)
Keynote: Matthias Göbbels(Erlangen)
Shelley Wiederhorn(Gaithersburg, USA)

This session will focus on novel high-tech ceramics. We invite papers that, in addition to treating processing and specific aspects of synthesis of modern ceramics, also highlight potential applications and span the bridge between resource and potential benefit to society. Apart from classical ceramics, high-temperature materials as well as ferroelectrics, photovoltaics and bioceramics are included in this special symposium. Papers that deal with specific aspects of brittle, ceramic-like materials, from synthetic or natural origin, are also invited.

S98: Aspects of Melts and Glasses
Convener: Tom Sharp(tom.sharp@asu.edu)
Convener: Stefan Lauterbach(stefan.l@geo.tu-darmstadt.de)
Keynote:Rainer Abart(Berlin)

The symposium on aspects of melts and glasses will focus on the amorphous nature of matter and its physical and chemical properties. Natural glasses and melts should similarly be represented in this symposium as synthetic amorphous materials such as for example polymer-derived glasses. It is anticipated to link mineralogical/geological aspects of glass formation and properties with the structure and properties of secondary glasses observed in novel high-tech materials.

S99: Archeometry
Conveners: Sabine Klein(sabine.klein@kristall.uni-frankfurt.de)
 Wolfgang Müller(w.mueller@gl.rhul.ac.uk)

This session will consider contributions comprising the full range of archaeometric and conservatory studies: the analysis of inorganic and organic archaeomaterials (e.g. metals, ceramics, rocks, glasses, pigments, wood, fabric, fibres), the study of metallurgical processes and techniques (slags, technology and production processes, mining), new developments in applied analytics (conservation, prospecting, dating, provenance studies, technological investigations), and also authenticity studies.
