What is the rationale for the selection/use of Au as the cell material?
Hello Laura! We use Au because it is inert under most experimental hydrothermal conditions (except in a strong oxidizing environment). There is a paper by Rosenbauer et al. (1993) that has a summary on different reaction-cell materials.
